Summary
The Indiana Secured School Safety Grant (SSSG) Program has served as a critical resource to Hoosier schools since 2013. The goal of this program is to help schools in the state remain safe and secure.
The state budget passed during the 2019 General Assembly session allocated $19 million to the SSSG program for school grants and administrative costs.
In all, the program has delivered more than $72 million in matching grants to Indiana school districts across the state, allowing them to address potential safety threats and prepare for emergency situations.
History of Funding
This program was signed into law in Indiana in 2013.
Additional Information
The program is an allocated state fund that provides matching grants to school corporations, accredited non-public (i.e., private) schools, charter schools and coalitions of school corporations.
SSSG funds may be used to:
- Employ a school resource officer (SRO); employ a law enforcement officer (LEO); provide school resource officer training described in IC 20-26-18.2(b)(2); enter into a contract or memorandum of understanding (MOU) with local law enforcement agency, private entity or non-profit corporation to employ an SRO or LEO within the school; and/or
- Purchase equipment and technology to:
a. Restrict access to school property; or
b. Expedite notifications to local law enforcement and first responders; and/or
- Conduct a threat assessment; and/or
- Provide firearm and self-defense trainings; and/or
- Cover initial set up costs for an active event warning system with the County's Sheriff Department. (no match requirement); and/or
- Implement a student and parent support services plan.
All grants will be reviewed on a competitive basis. There is no guarantee of funding.
To complete a SSSG application, each school or district must have a sub-grantee administrator or sub-grantee program manager identified in the system. To ensure new accounts are set up with enough time to complete the application, IDHS is requesting schools to submit account requests prior to 5 p.m. EDT on June 30, 2021.
To register as a sub-grantee administrator or sub-grantee program manager for your district or school, visit IntelliGrants.in.gov. A sub-grantee administrator account is required for any entity that would like to apply for the FY21 Secured School Safety Grant. If the same person will be filling multiple roles, they will need multiple logins to sign and submit documents. The sub-grantee administrator is responsible for setting up additional roles.
Eligibility Details
Eligibility for this grant program is offered to Indiana school corporations, accredited non-public schools, charter schools or a coalition of school corporations/charter schools. Eligible entities can apply jointly to address potential safety threats.
Deadline Details
Applications were to be submitted by June 30, 2021. A similar deadline anticipated annually.
Award Details
The award amount for this program varies and can be up to $100,000 with percentage match. Anticipated matching funds are what you plan to contribute in addition to the grant funds. For example, if you have two SROs and you plan to pay for one from grant funds and pay the second with school funds, the second SRO may act as your match. Item costs above what the grant will contribute could also count as the organization's match.
