Summary

Civil forfeiture removes proceeds of crime and property used to commit crime from our communities. This makes crime
unprofitable and reduces criminal behaviour by depriving offenders of the money and tools needed to commit future illegal acts. Under the Victims Restitution & Compensation Payment Act (which came into effect in 2008), property can be forfeited if it was acquired through an illegal act or used to carry out an illegal act. Forfeited cash and proceeds from the sale of forfeited property (e.g. houses and cars) can be used for a number of purposes set out in the legislation, including crime prevention and victims of crime programs.
Time limited grant funding is available for a period of up to two years supporting innovative, promising practice.
