    Summary

    The Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program provides financial and technical assistance to New Hampshire fire departments in cities or communities with a population under 10,000. The primary objectives of the program are saving lives and protecting property in rural areas.

    In New Hampshire, priority consideration is given to projects that include: 
    • Forest fire suppression equipment: Forest fire pumps, forestry hoses, back pack pumps, Class A foam equipment. Note: expendable items (i.e. foam) will not be considered.
    • Forest fire safety equipment: Nomex shirts, hard hats, head lamps.
    • Communication equipment: Portables, portamobiles, and home alerting monitors.
    • Structural fire fighting equipment. Note: only considered when all forestry requests are met. 
    Additional consideration is given to communities that were not awarded VFA funds last year.  
     

    History of Funding

    None is available. 

    Additional Information

    Grant funding for fire hall construction or the purchase of new fire trucks, town sirens, or EMS/rescue equipment supplies are not eligible. Purchases made prior to project approval do not qualify for funding.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are New Hampshire fire departments serving a rural area or a rural community with a population of 10,000 or less. 

    Deadline Details

    Grant applications are sent to Forest Fire Wardens and Fire Chiefs each November and have a submission deadline of February 1st. Communities are notified in March and have until April 15th to submit their completed award packet.

    Award Details

    Individual amounts vary. Cost sharing/matching of 50% the total project cost is required.
