    Summary

    The purpose of the Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) Program, is to provide Federal financial, technical, and other assistance to State Foresters and other appropriate officials to equip, train, and organize fire departments in rural areas and rural communities to prevent and suppress fires. A rural community is defined as having 10,000 or less population and maybe incorporated, unincorporated, a township or some other identifiable descriptor. 


    Eligible expenses include 

    • Wildland PPE,
    • Wildland equipment,
    • Communication equipment,
    • SCBA,
    • Training materials or
    • Other fire suppression and prevention equipment. 

    Priority funding is given to wildland fire equipment, safety items and communication needs.

    None is available.

    Additional Information

    Purchases made before the date of the VFA application are not eligible for reimbursement. Proof of Purchase documents, like invoices, and the Certificate of Expenditure Form must be dated after the date of the VFA application.

  • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are rural Kansas volunteer fire departments. The protection area must be under 10,000 in population.  

    Deadline Details

    Applications were to be submitted by April 15, 2022. A similar deadline is anticipated annually.

    Award Details

    Individual awards may be up to $4,999. Cost sharing/match of 50% is required.
