The Richard King Mellon Foundation is among the largest independent foundations in the United States. The Foundation's current giving priorities primarily serve southwestern Pennsylvania with a focus on the following program areas:
The Foundation gives first consideration to requests that clearly align with these interests and demonstrates the greatest likelihood of achieving measurable results.

The Foundation will not consider requests on behalf of individuals or from outside the United States. It does not encourage requests from outside Pennsylvania.
Eligible applicants are nonprofit agencies, local municipalities, universities, schools, and Indian Tribal Organizations. Support is provided for projects in conservation; education; human services; and regional economic development. Grants are restricted to the southwestern Pennsylvania region. Applicants must have a valid U.S. IRS Tax ID.
The General Application accepts proposals on a rolling basis through the foundation's online portal. Requests for Proposals (RFPs) have specific timelines for submission that are indicated in the detailed guidance on the foundation website.
Award amounts vary by proposal. For planning purposes, the mid-range of recent awards was approximately $50,000 to $250,000.
