    Summary

    The New Jersey Office of Highway Traffic Safety, in the Department of Law and Public Safety, is responsible for administering the State and Community Highway Safety Grant Project. Activities under the program are centered predominantly on efforts to control impaired driving; increase seat belt usage rates; promote the proper use of child passenger restraint systems; increase traffic law enforcement with an emphasis on speed/aggressive and distracted driving; improve safety for bicyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists, teens, and older drivers; provide additional training of State and local personnel; and improve the collection and analysis of traffic crash data. 


    Submission of a proposed highway traffic safety project that identifies a Statewide or local highway traffic safety problem, supporting statistics, causes, a strategy to solve problems, countermeasures, performance objectives, measurement standards, and a schedule of activities and goals. Projects should address at least one of the Federal priority areas:

    • Alcohol and Other Drug Countermeasures,
    • Police Traffic Services,
    • Traffic Records,
    • Motorcycle Safety,
    • Speed Control,
    • Pedestrian/Bicycle Safety,
    • Roadway Safety,
    • Occupant Protection, and
    • Emergency Medical Services.
     

    History of Funding

    Up to $15,000,000 is available annually.

    Additional Information

    The Division awards full-year traffic safety grants according to the federal fiscal calendar (October 1-September 30).   • Eligibility Details

    Eligible applicants are New Jersey state agencies and political subdivisions, including counties, municipalities, townships, districts and special districts, and nonprofit organizations.

    Deadline Details

    Applications are to be submitted by April 30, 2024. A similar deadline is anticipated annually. 

    Award Details

    Up to $15,000,000 is available to implement the NJ State Highway Safety Plan in 2024. Project periods will extend for 12-months, starting on October 1, 2024.
